Il verbo to be engaged significa essere fidanzati in senso proprio, ovvero essere impegnati in una relazione che porterà al matrimonio: She's engaged to the mayor's son, è fidanzata con il figlio del sindaco (si sposeranno). Quando si parla di rapporti meno definitivi, utilizzare la parola engaged potrebbe dare luogo ad equivoci. In questo caso, si può ricorrere alla locuzione to go out with oppure ai sostantivi boyfriend o girlfriend: I'm going out with Chiara, sto con Chiara; Have you got a boyfriend?, sei fidanzata? (non Are you engaged?).
